Ambient Soundbath Podcast #107 features the work of 58918012 with tracks taken from several of his recordings, including:

  1. Escape – Away
  2. Pressure – Lost Album
  3. Skies – Milestone
  4. Comfort – Away
  5. Rest (no p) – Lost Album
  6. Burial – Milestone

From the artist:

“First of all, I’d like to remind people around the world that the terrorist state named “Russia” is still killing Ukrainians on their god gave land and threatening nuclear weapon usage. Stand with Ukraine! Peace <3

“My name is Yurii Popov. I am a musician from Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine. 58918012 is my ambient music alias. I had a long road thru the music world to this step. I played and wrote a lot of music from punk-rock and alternative rock, to post / progressive metal. But something inside of me wanted to go out. And this creature found its way out under the name of 58918012.

“Music is one of those few things that makes me truly calm and happy. Sometimes it comes from the outside, sometimes from the inside, but it’s always my feelings. There’s nothing more to say.”

As Louise Hay writes in her book Mirror Work:

The mirror reflects back to you the feelings you have about yourself. It makes you immediately aware of where you are resisting and where you are open and flowing. It clearly shows you what thoughts you will need to change if you want to have a joyous, fulfilling life.

The Gateless Gate is a pseudonym of Allister Thompson. Allister and I met on Twitter; a seemingly precarious beginning, but one that’s been fruitful and productive. We’ve worked on a variety of things together, most recently a collection of songs and soundscapes called Lord Introvert, please check it out here. Allister and I are both northern midwesterners, or at least that’s how I like to think about it. While I’m in Michigan and he in North Bay, Ontario, we have similar regional and cultural sensibilities, as well as personal and musical interests. It’s all of these things that attracts me to Allister’s music and why I’ve wanted to get him on the Ambient Soundbath for some time.
Allister is profoundly versatile and prolific. He’s inspired by and explores a lot of musical territory, never really sticking with one thing except maybe his songs, which is a good thing. I believe that Allister might be the greatest songwriter Canada has seen since Gordon Lightfoot. I don’t know if Gordo’s a big deal in the rest of the world, but in Michigan and throughout Ontario, really the Great Lakes basin, Gordon Lightfoot is kind of God, a giant among 70s songwriters and a real-life Canadian superstar; kind of the Drake of 1978. Gordon Lightfoot’s music is the landscape of the region, I think that’s why it endures.
This Soundbath was inspired by Allister’s newest recording, Primordia, which is available here. Some tracks from this recording are featured in this Soundbath. Here’s what he has to say about it:

“This is an ambient music album that reflects the influence of early 70s German kosmische, contemporary drone ambient, and a touch of Steve Reich. It was made with mellotron, organ, piano, and synthesizer sounds.

“It’s for sitting back and contemplating Deep Time.”

This Soundbath features these tracks, in this order:
  1. Before Us from Primordia- Bandcamp
  2. Plateau
  3. Nightwalk
  4. After Us from Primordia – Bandcamp
  5. A Voyage to Arcturus – Bandcamp

Official Bio for Allister:
The Gateless Gate is the name under which Canadian Allister Thompson releases music in the ambient, new age, post-rock and kosmische genres. Thompson also releases singer-songwriter albums under his own name and as Twilight Fields, as well as psychedelia under several monikers. The Gateless Gate is named after a renowned collection of Zen koans.
Since 2012, The Gateless Gate has released numerous albums inspired by the greats of seventies German proto-ambient, contemporary drone music, and the lighter, more ambient end of the post-rock spectrum. Contemplation of nature during the different distinct boreal seasons is often the focus of his work.
Thompson works as a book editor and lives in North Bay, Ontario, Canada with a partner and three cats.

Just F*cking Relax - Calm Sounds for Tired Minds - Ambient Soundbath Podcast

This episode, Ambient Soundbath Podcast #104, is a, nearly 2-hour sonic journey, featuring highlights from Just F*cking Relax, Season 1.

There’s more information on that longform series below.

“Just F*cking Relax” – Somebody said this to me recently and it kind of hit me like a Buddhist Koan, which is a paradoxical anecdote or riddle, used in Zen Buddhism to demonstrate the inadequacy of logical reasoning and to provoke enlightenment.

The Just F*cking Relax series is a companion to the Ambient Soundbath Podcast where for years, I tried to do a kinder, gentler type of new age-oriented musical thing. Imagery of sitting in yoga or meditation positions, lotus flowers, candles and all the holistic health tropes and those things are great, still bringing me a sense of serenity when I see that kind of imagery, but the reality is that life is much more abrupt, in your face and we have to take respite when and where we can; it also doesn’t hurt to add a bit of a sense of humor to the churn of daily living. You might not be able to afford a trip to Esalen or the Omega Institute to center yourself, but you can put music on, take a few breaths in your car, on the subway or in a booth at Applebee’s and get in touch with yourself. In all instances, there needs to be time for YOU. Self-actualization shouldn’t require a plane trip to an exotic retreat and these are some of the many reasons that I created the Just F*cking Relax series.

Anyway, it’s a bit irreverent, but it’s also just that simple, isn’t it: Just F*cking Relax!

Here’s a listing of all the tracks for the first season of Just F*cking Relax:

Just F*cking Relax 1 – Calm Sounds for Tired Minds
Just F*cking Relax 2 – Music for Anxiety and Exhaustion
Just F*cking Relax 3 – Music for Anxiety and Self-Soothing
Just F*cking Relax 4 – Music for Dealing with Energy Vampires
Just F*cking Relax 5 – Music for Insomnia
Just F*cking Relax 6 – Music for Social Anxiety
Just F*cking Relax 7 – Music for Reproductive Rights and Bodily Autonomy
Just F*cking Relax 8 – Don’t Wish Your Life Away
Just F*cking Relax 9 – Embrace the Suck
Just F*cking Relax 10 – Music for Deep Sleep on Hot Nights

Listener Survey Results and Thank You!

First off, thank you to everybody who took the survey. Understanding your preferences as a listener is very important to me.

There was a tie between respondents where the frequency of new programs was concerned:

  • 45% of the respondents wanted new programs bi-weekly.
  • 45% of the respondents wanted new programs monthly.
  • 5% of the respondents wanted them weekly.

This was an important one for me, as most podcasts are done weekly;  that’s hard to keep up. However, we landed in a place that seems quite manageable. Thank you for your feedback on this.

Additionally, there seemed to be a strong preference for mobile listening over desktop or other devices; that broke down like this:

  • 80% of the respondents listen on a mobile device.
  • 60% of the respondents listen on a desktop device.
  • 10% listen on some other kinds of devices.

The podcast is available in many apps such as Spotify, Stitcher, Spreaker, TuneIn, etc… however, I’m interested in exploring a mobile app for the Ambient Soundbath Podcast – That’s been put on the ‘to do’ list.

Finally, I received some personal responses from longtime listeners. I’ll be getting in touch with you, directly.

I’m always looking for feedback, survey or not, so please feel free to reach out with your thoughts through the contact form on the website.

Also, as we try to grow the Ambient Soundbath for featured artists and listeners, alike, your kind donations are appreciated. Please feel free to use our donation link in the top right corner of the home page or click here.

The Ambient Soundbath has a great community in you.

I’m continually touched by the emails and thoughts that people share with me. I’d love to bring everybody more closely together. I think there’s really something great there. Thank you for being there.
